In a setback to Clayton Rodrigues (37), the Mumbai-based DJ lodged in Sharjah prison after being allegedly framed in a drugs case by one Anthony Paul, a court in Sharjah convicted him last week for carrying narcotics. His family and Indian government officials are in the process of filing an urgent appeal to prove that Rodrigues was not aware that the box of cake handed over to him in Mumbai in February this year had drugs hidden in it.
Paul had also got actor Chrisann Pereira nabbed in a drugs case in Sharjah. However, Chrisann was granted bail even as she is waiting for completion of the legal process to enable her to return to India from Sharjah where she is currently residing.
A government official said, “Rodrigues has been convicted by a Sharjah court last week for carrying drugs. However, since the involvement of those who framed him came to light recently, he did not have necessary documents to defend himself. However, we are hopeful that once the documents are made available, the authorities will consider the matter and overturn the conviction.”
Rodrigues could seek some hope from the case of another Mumbai-based couple — Mohammad Shaheed and Oniba Qureshi — who was unwittingly used as drug mules and arrested by Qatar authorities in 2019. They, too, faced conviction but after it came to light that they were unaware about the presence of narcotics in a bag that Shaheed’s aunt asked them to carry, they were acquitted of all charges and released in 2021.
Paul, along with his accomplice Rajesh Borate, were arrested in April by the Mumbai Police crime branch after it came to light that Paul tried to exact revenge on five people by sending them to Sharjah with articles laced with drugs. While three others managed to survive, Rodrigues and Pereira were caught with drugs.
In the case of Rodrigues, Paul was upset with him over a comment he made when both their families had gone on a trip to a farmhouse in 2022.
In January this year, on Paul’s instructions, Borate allegedly posed as an event manager and called up Rodrigues, offering him a job at an event in Sharjah. As he was about to fly to Sharjah on February 6, Borate gave him a cake that had drugs hidden in it.
As per the probe by the Mumbai Police crime branch, Paul then called up the Sharjah airport authorities and tipped them off about Rodrigues carrying drugs in a cake. When the police checked the cake box, they found drugs in it along with a note saying he had more drugs if anyone needed it. Rodrigues was arrested by the Sharjah airport police and is lodged in a Sharjah prison since.
Paul and Borate are lodged at the Arthur road jail at present and police said they will file a chargesheet soon.
